5 Tips for Choosing Your New Home’s Color Scheme

When moving into a new home it’s always difficult to decide what your color scheme will be.  Since your home is a place where you want to relax and find tranquility, choosing the right colors to decorate your space is hugely important.  Though this process can be a lot of fun it can also be very daunting.  Here are a few tips to help get you started!

  1. Set the mood. Ask yourself how do you want the room to feel?  If you’re looking for calm, choose colors such as green or blue, which are naturally soothing. In contrast, if you’d like to add a bit of excitement to a space, consider using red or even black.

  1. Look to your furniture.  Since refurnishing a space to suit your walls can be quite expensive, look to the pieces you already have for inspiration.  If you already know you want to keep your navy blue couch, make sure you choose a wall color that is complimentary and will be visually appealing to you and your guests.

  1. Go with the flow. Many people prefer to stick to one color when decorating their homes.  If you are one of these people, choose a color you know you already love and select various shades and hues.  This will help to create a sense of flow throughout your home and makes decorating a little easier.

  1. Big room first. Decorating an entire home can be overwhelming.  If you’re not sure what to do first, start with the biggest room in your home. Once you have established a base color, choosing the rest will be a bit easier.

  1. Keep the blank canvass. If you are still having issues deciding on which color to choose, keep the walls neutral.  By doing this you can easily change your scheme with accent pieces, such as pillows, throws and rugs as your tastes change.

These are just a few ideas you can use to assist you in choosing the right color scheme.  While they may be useful during the planning and designing process, simply going with your gut instinct can be an effective tool you can use in order to help make your new house into a home.
