Sugarhouse Homes
Today Sugarhouse is considered to be one of the hottest areas in the salt lake valley. The Sugarhouse area is roughly 1300 south to 2700 south, from 700 east to 2300 east. However many outline areas are some times called “sugarhouse” due to the fact that homes in outline areas are very similar in age and design. Sugarhouse was established in 1893, and gets its name from the sugar mill that was built in the heart of the area. Ironically there was never any sugar produced from the mill. The first Utah state prison was located in Sugar House during the 19th century and early 20th century, all the buildings have long been torn down and in its place is sugarhouse park.
THE HOMES:
Homes in sugarhouse are built from the late 1800’s to current. However the majority of the homes were built between 1915 and 1960. The overwhelming style of home is the bungalow. These homes range in size, but typically they range from 1,000 SF to 3,000 SF. Most of these homes have basements, but a good deal of them are shelf basements and are not overly tall. As buyers, things to look for are updates to electrical, plumbing, and roof. Many of the homes were built with aluminum wiring and galvanized plumbing. Today there are better materials that are safer and last longer. There are a lot of homes that have been completely rehabed that have many of the amenities of new construction homes, with the charm of old. As of January 1st 2007 homes range in price from $150,000 to $2,300,000.
THE ALLURE:
There are many reasons people move into the area. One of the main reasons is the location to downtown salt lake city. From anywhere in Sugarhouse it takes no more than 10 minutes to get to downtown. There is also the shopping. Sugarhouse is home to many small business that have been around for many years. It also features large stores such as Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, Circuit City, Toys R Us, and Shopko to name a few.
